A young American software engineer hangs himself in his Singapore apartment. At least that’s what the police say happened. Emma Lazar, a writer for the Wall Street Journal, thinks otherwise. She thinks Tyler Bartlett was murdered to keep him quiet, and the Singapore police are covering it up.
Emma asks Inspector Samuel Tay to help her investigate the young man’s death. Tay is a senior inspector in the elite Special Investigation Section of Singapore CID. He’s pretty much the best investigator the Singapore police have, but Tay’s father was an American and from him Tay inherited a strong streak of American individualism that has made him an outsider in tightly wound little Singapore. That’s mostly why Tay has been placed on leave. He shot a man and everyone knows it was self-defense, but Tay’s enemies have seized on the incident to try to get rid of him once and for all.
Tay is reluctant to get involved. It won’t help him get his job back to challenge the government’s official narrative about the death of Tyler Bartlett. But Emma’s story tickles his curiosity, and…well, the truth is she's beautiful and he’s bored, so he tells her he will help anyway.
Learning that Tyler Bartlett’s death was no suicide is easy enough for Tay. What's more difficult is finding out what the young man knew that made him worth killing. When Tay realizes his superiors are working behind the scenes to keep the secret, he becomes more determined than ever to discover what, and who, is really behind Tyler's murder.
Of course, there’s a problem there. If Tay does find out, won’t that make him worth killing, too?

I’m a fan of Jake Needham’s books, both the Jack Shepherd series as well as Inspector Tay, so I was looking forward to this, the 3rd Tay book. It started well and before I knew it I was 50 pages or so deep. That’s one of the fun things about Needham’s books, they’re a fast read and perfect for the beach or that dull plane ride or anytime when you don’t want to think too hard.Then I started to get irritated with the main character. Let’s face it, You read a detective novel because of the quirkiness of the detective. And whether or not he is smarter than everyone else, in the end he is supposed to figure out the mystery and catch the bad guy.
Not Tay. He does nothing. Oh, he smokes. And drinks coffee. Every chapter either begins or ends with Tay going to his garden and smoking. Sometimes one cigarette. Sometimes two. Usually with a cup of coffee. Every darned 20 pages or so. And he thinks. He thinks about the case, but doesn’t actually do anything. Then someone else calls him and gives him a clue. He never figures out anything for himself. Too busy smoking.
And boy is he stupid. He doesn’t know anything about computers. OK, maybe that’s cute at first. But a 50 year old man who is a police homicide inspector who doesn’t know what a desktop is? Or that you have to click twice on a document to open it? Who is proud of this? And proud that he doesn’t have email? Who doesn’t know what GPS is? Who thinks the long thing at the end of a gun might be a silencer?
Who takes the most important clue of the entire case and…forgets about it?
Who is approached by someone who claims to work for the Wall Street Journal but stays in the most expensive hotel in the city, and he doesn’t check her out?
No wonder this guy is on suspension. I would have sacked him years ago.
And the amazing plot twist that other reviewers were so excited about? So what I thought.
And in the end, Tay doesn’t solve the case; we never find out who was really responsible, and someone else takes care of the bad guy.
Enough already. I still enjoyed it but recommend that maybe you read another of the series. Excuse me now, I’m going into the garden to have a smoke. And think.

If you have already read the first or second book in this series, you will find this volume very irritating. It is exactly, robotically identical to the earlier episodes. Inspector Tay sits in his garden and imagines his dead mother speaking to him; he is in trouble with his superiors; he thinks he is being followed by Singapore's secret police and has the identical semi-vulgar argument with their chief; he is warned not to interfere with a recent crime; this recent crime involved an American citizen. I mean, many murder mysteries and many series are formulaic, but this is TOO MUCH. You almost feel insulted by the author, who must have a very low opinion of his readers. His former readers, in my case, after this book. And too bad, because the series started out with charm and promise.
I really like Jake Needham’s books and there’s little to nothing that I can think of that would dissuade me from reading more about Samuel Tay. “Ambassador’s Wife” remains one of my favorite reads since I bought my and I’ve recommended the britches off it. I liked "Dead American" okay but it wasn’t Needham’s best. I’d recommended it to anyone I thought would enjoy his work but only because it’s part of the series, since I don’t consider it a standout, and I doubt I’d re-read it.
That said, I thought the software being developed was much too obvious from much too early on, and that’s saying a lot from someone who’s disinterested and out-of-date with either global politics and disasters or technology. I kept telling myself it was going to be something more insidious, a plot farther under the radar, so that much at least was a disappointment.
The constant reference to cigarettes was Tremendously Off Putting if not an exercise in irresponsibility and it's 'way too obvious a ploy that not only doesn't add to the plot, if anything it detracts from it because of its chronic appearance. We get it, already Tay’s obsessed. At a total of 191 mentions of cigarettes, smoking, or Marlboros in 336 pages, that’s - what? - an average of one mention every 1.75 pages? Unless this is a paean to the pro-smoking crowd - given the current anathema of smoking – were I NeedhamI would give serious consideration to cutting down some.
For those who are keeping score, here are the standings
(1) Slight paranormal/supernatural/magic components (okay, the guy gets visits from his dead mother but it’s not chronic or obtrusive);
(2) Mild profanity;
(3) No gooey romance;
(4) No explicit sex;
(5) Violence but not gooey;
(6) No child abuse;
(7) No animal abuse;
(8) No alternative lifestyle agenda or promotion (unless you want to consider the almost pro-smoking campaign);
(9) Not a cliffhanger ending;
(10) Grammar and punctuation police, come ahead on I know you'll find something.
